Your Child's First Visit

Establishing the Dental Home

The AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recommends for patients to establish a dental home by 12 months of age or 6 months from when the teeth first erupt. The dental home is the ongoing relationship between the dentist and the patient, inclusive of all aspects of oral health care delivered in a comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinated, and family-centered way.

When & What Is My Child's First "Regular" Visit?

The first "regular" dental visit, should be between age's 1 ½ - 2 ½. We will gently examine your child's teeth and gums. X-rays may be taken (to reveal decay and check on the progress of your child's permanent teeth under the gums). We may clean your child's teeth and apply topical fluoride to help protect the teeth against decay. We will make sure your child is receiving adequate fluoride at home. Most important of all, we will review with you how to clean and care for your child's teeth.

What Should I Tell My Child About Their First Dental Visit?

We are asked this question many times. We suggest you prepare your child the same way that you would before his or her first haircut or trip to the shoe store. This will not be the frightening experience you may remember from your youth. If you are apprehensive or unsure about the trip give us a chance to show your kids how comfortable dentistry can be.
